Energy-saving Tips during Summer in Calgary

Tuesday, Jun 02, 2026

When Calgary heats up, it doesn’t take long before homes start warming up too and energy use climbs right along with it. A few small habits can help keep things comfortable without overworking your utilities.

During the day, keep blinds or curtains closed to block out direct sunlight and reduce heat buildup inside your home. In the evening, open windows to let cooler air in, then close them again in the morning to hold onto that cooler air for as long as possible.

Fans can also help you feel cooler when used correctly. Ceiling fans should run counterclockwise in the summer to push air downward, and they work best when you’re actually in the room.

It also helps to limit heat from inside your home. Cooking with smaller appliances when possible, avoiding the oven on hot days, and switching off unnecessary lights can all reduce extra warmth indoors.

Finally, small efficiency habits like using LED bulbs, sealing drafts, and setting a smart thermostat can make a noticeable difference over time.

Staying cool in the summer doesn’t have to mean higher energy bills. A few simple adjustments go a long way.
